Abstract

The prospect of tertiary education in the near future, rely on the educational technologies. The convergence of information and communication technology in education has spurs the way teaching and learning are carry out. The issue of technology into education is traced as old as the invention of paper and pen. The issue of e-learning is an aspect of recent technology in the field of education. This conceptual paper, tries to discuss the relevance of e-learning in the position of distance education in Nigeria. The meaning of e-learning and some of its historical background in Nigeria are discussed. The paper also focuses that National Open University of Nigeria is among the institutions dedicated to the provision of e-education in Nigeria. The paper highlights on the rationale, prospects and challenges of adopting and implementing e-learning in Nigeria especially in relation to the reconstruction of the education standards.
