Abstract

This study investigated the knowledge and extent of utilization of ICT skills in teaching by university lecturers in Nigeria using a descriptive survey research design. The population of the study was targeted at all the teachers in Nigerian universities. Out of these, Google forms automatically collected responses online and analysed them without indicating the sample size. The sample was stratified randomly into ranks of respondents and gender. A 58-item questionnaire named University Lecturers' ICT Knowledge and Skills Selfassessment Questionnaire (ULIKSSQ) was developed and given to ICT staff for validation. It was then administered to teachers in the universities using online Google forms. Data collected were analysed and presented using simple percentages, pie charts and bar charts. Where the figures were not very clear enough, tables were used as support to present the results. Findings revealed that the university lecturers expressed high level of knowledge and skills in using ICT in teaching to the extent of 81.3%. Areas where their ICT knowledge and skills utilization were low including marking students' scripts, keeping track of students' performance, using wizards to create reports and adding animation to power point presentation among others. Based on the findings, it was recommended that universities should regularly organize ICT related training for lecturers to improve their skills particularly in the areas where they demonstrated low competencies in the use of ICT for teaching and learning purposes.
